Family Scripture Study
Family scripture study has been so fun the past little while! We read every night before bedtime from the Book of Mormon. We stop as often as needed to make sure the kids understand what is going on. We’re currently reading in the late Alma chapters, which are filled with so many exciting stories - some of Jon’s favorites. So he has been the narrator lately, and has made it so fun for the kids to listen to. When he gets to a stopping point, the kids beg for more! They gasp when they hear the names Teancum, Amalickiah or Ammoron, and ask questions along the way. It has been so meaningful to be learning these stories and discussing the teachings behind them.
Note: We use “The Book of Mormon for Latter-Day Saint Families.” I really love that it breaks down the text into smaller sections within the chapter since the chapters are often too long for one sitting with the kids. We keep track of where we stopped with a little sticky note (and of course the nice bookmark). The text is larger and it has some great pictures in it as well. The extra definitions in the margin at the bottom are helpful, too. It is an excellent resource!
One thing that has made a big difference was letting Andrew join Adam in the job of saying “And it came to pass” every time it is written in the scriptures. He had been roaming around the room playing until we gave him the job (the night pictured above). He immediately sat down with the other kids, excited to be a part, and stayed there the entire time! I was surprised at how huge of a difference it made. Ever since then he has been ultra excited to say his part. When Jon forgot tonight and slipped out the words “it came to pass,” Adam bonked him on the head, and both he and Andrew died laughing.
I’m so thankful for family scripture study time!
